Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, is a popular destination for tourists from around the world. It is also a place where education has long been held in high esteem, not least during the 18th and early 19th centuries, a period known as the Scottish Enlightenment.

A statue of David Hume, philosopher, stands at the top of the High Street and, nearby, is a memorial to Adam Smith, the renowned political economist. In addition to the study of philosophy and political economy, there was medicine, engineering, geology, chemistry, architecture, zoology, botany, sociology, agriculture, archaeology and law.
